Vallee ties another record, but Gators fall to NYU-Poly
Brooklyn, NY – The Sage Colleges' women's basketball team travelled to NYU-Poly on Tuesday night for a Skyline Conference contest. The host Fighting Blue Jays collected the 47-43 win to improve to 10-12 overall and 5-6 in the conference. The loss puts Sage at 8-14 overall and 4-8 in the league.
Sage held a 25-12 lead at the break, but was overcome by their hosts as they poured in 35 second-half points while holding the Gators to just 18.
For the Gators, senior guard Sarah Carciobolo (Niskayuna, NY/South Colonie) finished with 12 points and also added five rebounds and five assists in the contest. Rookie forward Amie Jefferson (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) tallied five points, but tied her personal-best effort with 13 rebounds and swatted away four shots. Jefferson now has 41 blocks on the season, an active Sage single-season record. She also stands at the No. 5 spot on the career block list as well. She also leads the Gators with her 162 rebounds as well.
Junior guard Carly Vallee (East Greenbush, NY/Catholic Central) tallied 11 points and added three more three-pointers in the action. Vallee holds the all-time three-point mark and now has 107 on her career and a personal-best 53 this season, which ties the Gator single-season mark of 53 set by Jamie Desso (2003-2004).
NYU-Poly's Margaux Pickell finished with a double-double on 13 points with 17 rebounds.
Vallee had just hit a three before the buzzer to but a damper on the first half for NYU-Poly. Pickell and Company responded for a thrilling second half performance that saw NYU-Poly tie the game at 43-43 with just over 2:00 to play on a Shelby Bruns (Elko, NV) jumper. The junior finished with 11 points and nine boards.
With 51 ticks left, sophomore Tabitha Larsen (Ramsey, NJ) hit a jump shot from the left baseline to give the Lady Jays their first lead, 45-43. Sage had a chance to tie put couldn't convert and had to foul. Freshmen Catherine Thompson (Spackenkill, NY) hit both to seal the win.
Sage returns to action in Skyline Conference contest on February 11 hosting Farmingdale State in the Kahl Center at 1 p.m. Sage will participate in the WBCA's Play 4Kay events that afternoon and are asking fans to wear pink to help with raising awareness for a cure for cancer. The Gators will also honor 2012 senior, Sarah Carciobolo in conjunction with Senior Day on Saturday.
