Gator rookies lead Sage to a 60-55 win
Staten Island, NY--- The Sage Colleges' women's basketball team traveled to the College of Staten Island on Sunday afternoon for a non-conference matchup with the Dolphins. Sage tallied a 60-55 win to improve to 2-5 overall, while CSI drops to 4-3.
The Gators held a 24-23 edge at the break as rookie guard Nicole Lanteri (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) had seven of her career-high 11 points on the afternoon, while sophomore forward Chelsea Martin (Davenport, NY/Jefferson Central) added eight of her 12 points in the first half.
By game's end, Sage had four players finish with double-digit scoring efforts, while rookie Amie Jefferson (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) turned her first double-double with 10 points and a career-best 12 rebounds. After exploding for a career-high nine rebounds and four blocks on Saturday at SUNY-Old Westbury, Jefferson surpassed both marks on Sunday with her rebounding effort and a game-best six blocked shots. She now leads the team with 14 blocked shots on the season as well as 48 rebounds and a 6.9 per game average.
Freshman Megan Bowman (Saranac, NY/Saranac) led all Sage players with 14 points, another career-high for the Gator guard. Sage's junior forward Kara Hackett (Peru, NY/Peru Central) also turned in a strong performance off the bench with eight points. Classmate Laurel Jicha (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) also finished with a Sage personal-best nine points in the action after connecting on four-five shots from the floor.
Katelyn Hepworth was the lone Dolphin in double-digit scoring as she finished with 15 points, six rebounds and three blocks, but it was not enough as Sage overcame the ninth tie of the game at 4:09 (51-51) and went on a 9-4 run to cap the road win. Bowman added four of those points in the final stretch to spur Sage to the win.
The Gators will host Purchase College in its Skyline Conference home opener on December 7 at 6 p.m. in the Kahl Center.
