
Sage falls short at Plattsburgh State
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Jan. 17, 2012) – A hot shooting night from the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team (6-6, 3-4 SUNYAC) propelled them to an 89-57 win in non-conference action over The Sage Colleges Gators (6-9, 2-4 Skyline) on Tuesday evening.
The Cardinals shot an impressive 54.1 percent from the field in the first half and then came out from the break on fire from three-point range, shooting 55.6 percent.
The 89 points scored was a season-high for the Cardinals. Plattsburgh had three players in double digit scoring, including Kathleen Payne who notched a double-double for a second straight game. Payne scored 28 points, on 13-for-20 shooting, and grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds to lead the game in both categories. Brooke Reifinger dropped 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting and Kerri Salisbury scored 10 points and had five rebounds. Brittany Marshall, Lindsey Larivee and Johni Coryea each scored nine points of their own in the win. Both Larivee and Coryea had good nights from beyond the arc, Larivee went 2-for-2 and Coryea 3-for-4.
Plattsburgh led by 22 points at the break after jumping out to a 22-9 lead 7:08 into the game. The Cardinals held an edge on the defensive glass with 31 rebounds and recorded a season-high 47 rebounds total. Salisbury, Dana Nucaro and Jalen Hart each snatched five rebounds for the Cardinals; all five of Hart's rebounds came on the defensive end.
Sage's sophomore forward Chelsea Martin (Davenport, NY/Jefferson Central) and junior forward Kara Hackett (Peru, NY/Peru Central) tried to get things going for the Gators, both recording 14 points. Martin's 14 points was a season-high as she also grabbed a team-high nine boards on the night.
Sage's senior guard Sarah Carciobolo (Niskayuna, NY/South Colonie) was held to five points keeping her just short of her 1,000th career point. She will try for the mark on Thursday before a home crowd as she brings 997 career points into the contest. Junior guard Carly Vallee (East Greenbush, NY/Catholic Central) fourth all-time on the career list as she moved ahead of Erin Willis (87, 1999-2004) in the contest.
Freshman guard Megan Bowman (Saranac, NY/Saranac) tallied seven points, while tying her personal-best with six assists, a feat she has now accomplished four times in her rookie season.
Sage returns to action in a home Skyline Conference game on January 19 as they host the Dolphins of the College of Mt. St. Vincent in the Neff Center (Troy, NY) at 7 p.m.
