Gators are tournament bound in Skyline Tennis
Troy, NY – The Sage Colleges' women's tennis team hosted Yeshiva University on Sunday afternoon in a Skyline Conference match. The host Gators racked up an 8-1 win and have secured a spot in the 2013 Skyline Conference Women's Tennis Championship Tournament. Sage improves to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the Skyline, while Yeshiva drops to 3-3 overall and 0-3 in the league. Prior to the match Sage honored their 2013 seniors in conjunction with Senior Day, Mary Kate Hayward (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls) and Nicole Riley (Catskill, NY/Catskill).
For the 2013 Gators the appearance in the conference tournament will be the fourth in program history (2007, 2008, 2009, 2013), while the berth is the first for Gator Head Coach Bruce Perry.
At No. 1 singles, Sage's junior Kirsten Ackerman (Rensselear, NY/Guilderland) beat sophomore Galila Shapiro (Englewood, NJ/Frisch), 6-1, 6-1. The win puts Ackerman at 14-2 this season in singles play.
Both Sage's seniors were also victorious as Riley posted a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles over Yeshiva's sophomore Jannah Eichenbaum (Oceanside, NY/SKA). The win puts Riley at 6-7 in singles this fall. Hayward added a win at No. 6 singles, beating junior Tova Weingarten (Baltimore, MD/Bais Yaakov of Baltimore), 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles, Ackerman and Riley posted an 8-1 win over Shapiro and Eichenbaum and improve to 11-3 overall on the fall with one another.
The Gators are back in action on October 16 travelling to Bard College for a non-conference match at 6 p.m. The semifinals of the Skyline Conference Tournament will take place on October 23 at a time and venue once the complete field has been set.
