Colonie, NY---The Sage Colleges men's soccer team hosted the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont College on Wednesday night and tallied a 2-1 win. The victory extends Sage's win streak to five straight games and puts the Gators at 5-1, while SVC drops to 0-5.
The two teams played a scoreless first half before freshman midfielder Ruben Olivares (Pico Rivera, CA/East Los Angeles College) connected on his first goal of the season on a pass from freshman Tyler Hickey (Clifton Park, NY/Catholic Central) at 57:48 to break the scoreless action.
Sage's sophomore midfielder Gustavo Trinidad (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) tied the action with a penalty kick at the 67:55.
Sage's junior forward Michael Sparrin (Ilion, NY/Ilion) broke the tie on a feed from Trinidad at 72:54 for his fifth goal of the season.
In goal for the Gators, freshman TJ Zehner (Beacon, NY/Beacon) made 4 saves in net, while SVC's sophomore goalie Brenden Shea (North Providence, RI/North Providence) recorded 4 saves in the loss.
Sage returns to action on September 15 hosting Sarah Lawrence College at the Bethlehem SoccerPlex (Glenmont, NY) in a 2 p.m. non-conference match. Southern Vermont College returns to action for a non-conference game at Wheaton College (MA) on September 16 with a 1 p.m. start.
